I'm Emma Magdalena, Artist and Icon Painter.

Through the prayerful art of painting an icon for you, a sacred space comes to life. A holy place, where you can encounter God, and God can encounter you. In each brushstroke, I experience the joy of God's presence. My greatest passion is to share that joy and presence with you.

About Me

I'm Emma Magdalena Rae Rhead. I'm an artist and Orthodox iconographer in training, living and working in the beautiful historic city of Chester, England.

My journey into iconography began with a heartfelt prayer for truth. Listening quietly, I followed a gentle call that led me to the sacred art of iconography, and through it, to a deeper love for Christ and His Orthodox Church.

I’m blessed to train in person under professional iconographer and Orthodox priest Father Justin Venn of Studio Sanctus. I have also studied with world-renowned iconographer and liturgical artist Aidan Hart. In 2025, I will continue my formation on the three-year Icon Painting Course at The King’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts in London, under Aidan Hart’s tuition.

Rooted in the Byzantine tradition, my work follows the ancient methods of Christian imagery while allowing space for my own developing style. Each icon is hand-painted on wooden board using egg tempera made from natural earth pigments and eggs from my own hens. Every piece is a contemplative act of prayer, stillness, and communion with the holy person depicted.

Before becoming an artist, I spent over 30 years as a medical doctor, psychotherapist and coach. My work as a doctor and therapist deepened my ability to be fully present, listen deeply, attune to another, and observe carefully for details and patterns. These skills and experiences continue to shape my sacred art practice today.

Though humbly still a student of this sacred craft, I am open to conversations about projects or commissions that align with my current stage and practice. Please feel free to get in touch if you have questions, wish to explore an idea that’s on your heart, or simply want say hello.
